As a biologist, Dr. Duncan uses electrophysiologic and bioimaging techniques to define early signaling pathways associated with hormonal and mechanical stimulation on the regulation of bone and cartilage physiology. Focusing on ion channels, he seeks to determine the role of TRP, voltage sensitive calcium channels, potassium channels and mechanosensitive channels in the regulation of bone mass and cartilage damage. Conversely, he also determines how musculoskeletal cells can regulate their response by changing both the signaling molecules available for signaling and the mechanical state of the cell.
